Importance of Timely, Reliable Diagnosis

Early and accurate diagnosis is critical for the effective prevention and control of infectious diseases. However, in many developing countries, diagnostic facilities are either unavailable or they lack the appropriate equipment to perform effectively. Another issue is that laboratory personnel are insufficiently trained and may not know what tests are available or have difficulty interpreting the results.

Support for Improved Diagnostic Facilities

In collaboration with its partners, AMP is working to provide advice and assistance to improve diagnostic facilities in sub-Saharan Africa. We do this by providing technical training to laboratory staff, transferring technology (e.g., polymerase chain reaction or PCR), and making microbiological mobile laboratories available for rapid field diagnosis.
